Both eyeliners are topselling products in Asia, most noticeably in Japan. Since I own both I figured a comparison would be nice. So let’s see which eyeliner is in my opinion the better one.
I made a video where you can see “real life” swatches. I included them in this post as well, but I find it easier to notice the difference of application in the video.
Product packaging:
I really don’t buy products based on their looks, but I have to say, the Dolly Wink eyeliner looks adorable with the pink polka dots style. The K-Palette looks like your everyday eyeliner that you can buy at local stores. Pretty boring, no? There’s a limited edition available that looks cute, but the regular version is just a plain black packaging, so the vote goes to Dolly Wink.
Availability:
Dolly Wink is insanely popular in Asia, I think pretty much EVERYONE knows the brand. This is due to the popular model Tsubasa Masuwaka, a Japanese Gyaru icon. Because Dolly Wink is more popular, it’s also more widely available. Pretty much every store that sells Japanese cosmetics, will carry this brand. K-Palette is not so widely available but you can get it on eBay and Sasa.com. The vote goes to Dolly Wink.
The velvet tip:
Both look really similar but the K-Palette is slightly smaller then Dolly Wink. I do find that the latter one is a bit harder than K-Palette, as in less bendable. While you barely use any strength, the tip of the K-Palette eyeliner seems to bend a lot faster. I find it easier to make a smaller line with Dolly Wink, because that tip is not so bendable. Another vote for Dolly Wink.
Pigmentation:
I have a lot more trouble applying K-Palette neatly. When I swatch it there’s the perfect black color that I want as an eyeliner, but somehow that doesn’t show up well on my eyes. You can see why on the swatches. Maybe it’s because my eyelids are rather oily (maybe my hands were oily as well), but as you can see the coverage sometimes lacks a bit. Dolly Wink makes eye lining a lot easier because I don’t have to go over the same line a few times to build up the color. Dolly Wink wins this category.
I increased the contrast so you can see the difference better. As you can see K-Palette sometimes lack the perfect coverage.
K-Palette seems a bit shinier as well.
Staying/Lasting power:
Both have good lasting powers, but Dolly Wink starts to fade after a few hours even when you have a primer underneath. It doesn’t smudge, the color just fades a little. Both withstand rain and you will have to use a very good cleanser (I use cleansing oil) in order to remove every trace of eyeliner. Don’t rub your eyes too often though. I sometimes forget I’m wearing makeup and while rubbing it, it doesn’t smudge but it will leave some gaps between your eyeliner. It actually seems like you are removing it without smudging… wow, does that make sense?! It’s like the eyeliner balls up a little and that makes it easier to scratch off. You will still see traces of eyeliner but with some gaps in between so it will look terrible. This happens to the both of them.
Also, I find that K-Palette takes a little longer to dry on my eyes. I literally have to wait a few minutes before I can use my eyelash curler otherwise my eyeliner is all messed up. When it’s applied and dried properly, it will stay on for the longest time though.
I find that Dolly Wink wins this category. You have to apply less, which means less buildup and a little harder to “scratch” it off when you rub your eyes.
Price:
K-Palette costs $ 14.10 on SASA.com and Dolly Wink is US$ 13.50. I know prices vary when you search for it on various websites. I’ve used SASA since it’s the most commonly used website worldwide to buy Asian cosmetics/skincare. Vote goes to Dolly Wink.
Conclusion:
Dolly Wink wins by getting all six votes. Bare in mind though, the eyeliners are really quite similar. Because of that, I found that I was a bit nitpicking sometimes… Dolly Wink worked better for me, but that doesn’t mean K-Palette is a bad eyeliner. It might work better for you.
If you’re looking for a cute, precise, intense black eyeliner = try Dolly Wink. When I use K-Palette, I have to build up the coverage but that might be just me. So if you don’t care much about the packaging, can deal with building up the color, have great lasting powers, then K-Palette is for you.
Or if you’re like me, try Dolly Wink first. Fall in love and still end up buying K-Palette just to give it a shot. LOL.
Have you tried any of these eyeliners? Which one is your favorite?
aah, dolly wink ziet er zo goed uit zeg!
Die moet ik ooit kopen, haha!
Wauw, de Dolly Wink vind ik erg mooi!
I’m a bit surprised that the k-palette lost out actually, I’ve read amaaazzing reviews on it and really want to pick it up. I’m not really into Dolly Wink (don’t brick me!) I find it so over-priced. Their lashes DO look amazing but I’m too broke to continuously buy such pricey things. lol
It’s really not a bad eyeliner. It does it’s job, but it doesn’t work well for me. I read the reviews (which is why I bought it after purchasing Dolly Wink) and I can see why people like it, it just wasn’t the perfect eyeliner for me. :-(
